My Version of Heaven-on-Earth

My son asked what my version of heaven-on-earth would be.  Having never thought of it, I found the task a bit daunting.  Here is what I came up with after a few weeks thought:

The weather would be mostly sunny with weekly rain and thunderstorms. The winter would last only one month, and would consist of snow. We would have spring and fall, and summer would be long and the temperatures would be like those in San Diego.

Flowers would grow year round.

I would be a better person, and my actions would not hurt others.

I would have energy, self-confidence and persistence.

I would not care what others thought of me.

Money would not buy influence, and power would not corrupt.

We would all strive (and mostly succeed) to live by the Golden Rule, especially as stated in the negative: Do not do unto others what you would find hateful/painful if done to you.

Life would be fair.

No child would die of hunger, illness, war.

What would YOUR heaven-on-earth look like?

Book

Today I finished reading The New American Militarism: How Americans Are Seduced by War by Andrew J. Bacevich (2005).  I highly recommend it as informative and thought provoking, whatever one's political views.

Bacevich states his thesis right at the beginning:  "Today as never before in their history Americans are enthralled with military power.  The global military supremacy that the United States presently enjoys--and is bent on perpetuating--has become central to our national identity."  The book is a history and explanation of how we got to this point, with emphasis on the years since WWII.  Bacevich is not a pacifist, but a true conservative who offers suggestions for abating our over-emphasis on military solutions.

Welcome

I occasionally have the desire to share book titles, quotes or facts I come across.  This blog is my experiment in doing so.
